NOAH ALEXANDER SHOOK was born January 13, 1840 in Bastrop Co., Texas and died May 18, 1932. He is buried in Old Tillatoba Cemetery north of Charleston, Tallahatchie County Mississippi. He married Margaret Jane Vanlandingham July 05, 1855, Daughter of Dawson Vanlandingham and Neomia Stringfellow. His second wife was Sarah Ann Brunson, born October 20, 1870 in Tallahatchie County Mississippi, daughter of George Brunson and Sarah ?. His third wife was Ellen U. ? About March 1899. His fourth wife was Ellen Medlin. They married November 14, 1899 in Tallahatchie County Mississippi. His fifth wife was A.D. Osburn, they married September 02, 1908 in Tallahatchie County Mississippi.

Noah Alexander Shook was born, presumably in Bastrop County, Texas January 1840, where his parents Alexander and Judia were living in 1839. Sometime

Later his parents moved back to Alabama, where Noahs brother Saul Simon was born, by 1850 both Noah and Simon were living in Chicksaw County Mississippi, with their parents. Their sister Louisa, by then married Iverson Adams and lived near by. In July 1855 Noah married Margaret Jane Vanlandingham, from South Carolina. By 1860 Noah and Margaret, along with their 3 children (Dawson, Sarah Angeline and James ), had moved to Calhoun County Mississippi, where they lived near the parents and siblings, Louisa, John and Solomon. In May 1862 Noah along with his brother Solomon enlisted in the Confederate Army at Benela, Ms. ( small community near Pittsboro in Calhoun County Ms.) Noah served as a Sergeant in his regiment, Co. G. of the 42nd Mississippi Infantry, which was formed and led by Captain J.M. Gaston. Soon after enlisting, Noah’s regiment was detached to the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Robert E. Lee. Noah’s regiment arrived in Richmond, Va. In July 1862, and was in camp of instructions until November 15, 1862 when his company, along with four others was sent to Fredricksburg, Va. Where they were on duty guarding the river fords for three days and nights alone against the advance of USA General Burnside’s army. In December 1862, Noah’s regiment campaigned near Goldsboro, North Carolina, and in the spring of 1863 participated in the siege of Suffolk by CSA General Longstreet. In June 1863 Noah’s regiment by now assigned to CSA General A.P. Hilll’s Corps, was in Richmond, Va., when it received orders to proceed to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On July 01, 1863 Noah’s regiment, commanded by General Joseph R. Davis, was sent in advance and within a mile of Gettysburg encountered Union Soldiers in strength, also advancing in the ensuing battle. Noah’s regiment met with resistance, and loss was heavy. Noah and his brother Solomon were captured by Union Soldiers and transported to Fort McHenry, Maryland, and later Fort Delaware, Deleware, where Noah remained imprisoned until June 11, 1865 when he signed the OATH OF ALLEGIANCE to the USA and was released. We do not know whether Noah was wounded when captured, but he would suffer from an ulcerated left leg (which became diseased while he was imprisoned) for the rest of his life.

After his release from prison and his brother Solomon walked home to Mississippi from Delaware. After returning home, Noah lived for a short time in Charleston Ms., where he opened the first saloon on a corner across from the Court Square. (Reportedly Noah’s grandson David has a goblet used in the Saloon.) He fathered two more sons (Thomas and John), before his wife Margaret died May 1869. In 1869 Noah moved to Paynes, Ms. where he married Sarah Ann Brunson, and lived next door to his parents. Noah and Sarah had 10 children (Judia, George, Noah, Martha, Mary, Solomon, Riley, Joseph and Virginia) before Sarah’s death in March 1899. Within six months of Sarah’s death, Noah married and buried another wife, Ellen (last name unknown), who was 30 years his junior. Two months after Ellen’s death in September 1899, Noah married Ellen Medlin, who was still living with him in 1900, along with children, Solomon, Riley, Joseph, and Virginia. We do not know when or where Ellen Medlin, died but Noah was married (for the fifth and final time) to Mrs. A.D. Osburn on September 2, 1908. We do not know what happened to Noah’s fifth wife, but his granddaughter recalled that she ran away after living with Noah for one or two months. According to his granddaughter, Nora Glen Shook, (Wife of John Barksdale Denley, Sr. and Mother of Barksdale and Nick Denley,) Noah’s wife thought the Shooks were “Strange People” and was unable to live with so many people, as the house was always filled with relatives. By 1920 Noah was still living in Paynes, unmarried, with his son Joseph and daughter-in-law Lelena. He died in 1932 and was buried in Old Tillatoba Cemetery outside Charleston, Ms, alongside his first three wives, and two of his children, Mary and Dawson. At one time Noah owned the whole “hill” near Paynes where his descendants still live. He gave his son George, the land now owned by George’s grandsons, David and Phillip. He gave his son James and daughter Martha, the land where Noah’s granddaughter Verlie Shook Worsham now lives. He gave his son Noah the land where the old homeplace stood. And he gave his son Thomas the land now owned by Harwood “Buddy” Shook. Relatives remember that Noah had pet bears, trained to take in firewood, and would pay anyone $10.00 to wrestle the bears and win. The bears always won. He also had numerous pet raccoons and oxen. He was never without his walking cane, and his beard was long and white. He also had a “toddy” every morning. Noah served with Company G, 42nd Mississippi inf. CSA. He joined along with his brother Saul Solomon, May 13, 1862 and was enrolled by James Gaston, of Co. G, Gaston Rifles, at New Liberty Mississippi. Noah was captured at the battle of Gettysburg, Pa., July 01, 1863, and confined to Fort Delaware until his release June 11, 1865.

This history of Noah Shook was gathered from census records, military, family, real estate and marriage records, written by Harriett Denley Faust, daughter of John Barksdale Denley, Jr., and granddaughter of Nora Glen Shook Denley.

Notes for JOSEPH "JOE" SHOOK:

Shook Cemetery was established in 1898.

The sign at the cemetery reads: Shook Cemetery Established 1898 in Memory of Joe Shook

Source: Suzy Edmonds Crews (pictures taken at the cemetery) July 31, 2003.

Joe had a grist mill on the Laurel Creek just across the hill from where he lived on Shook Branch. Everybody in this area would bring turns of corn to the mill for Joe to grind into meal. Joe would take a toll of meal for grinding the corn. Joe Shook also carried the mail on horse back from Faust Post Office across Wolf Pit Mountain to English Post Office on the head of Puncheon Fork Road.
