Preserve The Shook Smathers House Committee Updated 3/29/2001 M I N U T E S On Saturday, March 24, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. more than 100 family and friends gathered at the Shook-Smathers Home in Clyde for a most enjoyable tour. After the tour was over and visiting with all interested persons that had stopped to see what exactly was going on the crowd dispersed to the Clyde Town Hall to discuss plans to "Save The Shook-Smathers Home" and enjoy a pot luck lunch. At approximately 12:00 Noon Wilma Simpson opened the Business Meeting by welcoming all from near and far who had expressed a desire to save the Shook-Smathers Home. Wilma introduced two persons who are descended from William Welch, the nam who bought the house from Jacob Shook's estate. Willliam Welch was the last and final bidder for $1200.00 . Other honored guest were Dr. Doris Hammett, Bruce Briggs, Wayne Smathers and Eric Morgan were reconized. An accounting of the meeting held in the home of Dr. Doris Hammett on Friday, 3-23-2001 for the purpose of forming a new "Save the Shook-Smathers House Committee" was given. Robyn Putnam was choosen to lead the new group as Chairman. Bob Jones will work as publist. Brenda Hudgins as vice-chairman and assisstant to Robyn. Peggy Greene as Secretary-Treasurer. Dr. Doris Hammett and Bruce Brice will act as advisors and consulants. Robyn talked briefy about future meeting days and location for the meeting. Bob Jones will work as publist for the committee and will act as web master for the new web site he has created for this purpose. Bob discussed his plans with the group. The web address for us is WWW.SHOOKHISTORY.ORG. Bruce Brice of the Waynesville Historical Society spoke about previous work and of his hopes for this mission. Dr. Doris Hammett spoke of her work and provided old records for our information. Both will work as advisors on the new committee. The floor was opened for questions and discussions from all present. Many interesting points were discussed and all of them will be taken into consideration as we search for means to accomplish our mission. HG Hudgins lead the group in asking the blessing for the meal. And what a meal it was! Following the meal, much shareing of family histories, pictures and just time for getting aquainted with each other was enjoyed by all. Minutes were taken by Carolyn Shook. Next committee meeting will be Monday, March 26, 2001 at the City Hall in Clyde. Attendance by all interested parties is encouraged. |
