another look

August 20, 2002

While the efforts to raise money in 2001 to save the house were unsuccessful, new efforts are underway to preserve the old structure in 2002.

Most of the current efforts are through the Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina who holds an option on the property. A purchaser through the foundation would receive a deed with restrictions that ensure the preservation of the Historic Structure. Please visit their web site for details.

This page takes us on a quick tour of the old house in Clyde offering some views not presented in the original picture gallery.

There are two markers for the Shook House, the one everyone knows of is on US 19-23 in front of the house, but this less known marker is several blocks north of the house next to the Pigeon River.

The porch swing at the front porch is awaiting a new owner.

In many places the floor boards supported by those joists are 14 inches or more wide...

The kitchen plaster needs serious work, but one can only wonder what the fireplace would be like without all that white paint.

In every room one imagines these treasures refinished

Behind the paneled walls and layers of wallpaper lie the ancient virgin timbers of the first frame house built west of the Blue Ridge in North Carolina

The wood in some of the mantels is amazing behind the cloud of years of neglect.

The huge Front Room Hearth and mantle may predate the 1890 redecoration.

The stairway is the child of the Victorian era.

The incredible Dining Room is also from the Victorian era.

Electrical services are a bit outdated.

Some rooms look "ready to move in".

The windows might need a little washing (looking east toward Clyde)

The "Prophet's Room" is the house's greatest treasure.

It's 16 inch virgin boards carry the signatures of local notables across the ages, a testament to the memory of the things that happened here.

The attic is a good place to see the construction of the house.

It's also obvious in the attic that the 1890s addition wasn't built nearly as well as the original house.
