and another house locally known as Mahala's House

The Shook-Penland house stood across the Pigeon River from Jacob Shook's original holdings on land he purchased around 1815. It supposedly burnt in the 1970s.

Mahala's House was another local landmark for many years. It stood along Campgound Branch just south of the Shook-Smathers House on a site that is today across US 19-23 from that house. This was on property sold to Peter Shook by Jacob. Mahala's house burned in 1980.
